Who is Sophie? It’s the most common question at the restaurant. Sophie is our two year old daughter. She runs the show and acts likes she owns the place. Don’t be surprised if she begs off of your plate. It’s happened a time or two.

John Helleberg is the chef and co-owner of the restaurant with his wife, Marcie Wily. John has 20 years experience as a chef, starting in Virginia working under the reputable Jimmy Sneed at The Frog and the Redneck. From there, John moved to Telluride, where he worked at the critically acclaimed Allred’s and owned 221 South Oak. After selling 221 South Oak, John moved to LA, where he worked at the now Two Star Michelin restaurant, Melisse. He decided to move to the wind and has since made Hood River his home. He has worked at The 6th Street Bistro, as the Executive Chef at Con Gusto, and as the Chef de Cuisine at Celilo Restaurant and Bar for its first two years of business.

Sophie’s menu changes frequently and draws heavily on local and organic ingredients, including produce coming from the restaurant’s own farm, Bitterroot Farm. John trained in French cuisine and has a passion for Italian, so you will find a little of each in his food. He describes his food as simple, unpretentious food with bold flavors.
